Chronic Uterine Infection Caused by Fetal Retention and Treatment by Unilateral Ovariohysterectomy in a Dog

A four-year-old Anatolian Shepherd bitch was brought to our clinic with an intermittent purulent-hemorrhagic vaginal discharge complaint no general symptoms for six months following the last parturition. There were signs of mass or lesion on wall during physical examination. Anechogenic uterine content, hyperechoic structures freely floating in lumen, and suspicious fetal tissue remnants detected by ultrasonography only left horn. Hematological parameters revealed chronic infection. The unilateral ovariohysterectomy operation performed more affected horn maintain patient’s fertility. Two bone reddish infectious content at postsurgical incision. Throughout postoperative five months, any complication not observed. We thought that fetus might have undergone retention autolysis weeks, which caused Obstetrical controls are well-advised all parturitions reveal remnant cases/complications a normal postpartum process.
